Speed limit: 30 km/h by default throughout the Brussels-Capital Region. Elsewhere, 50 km/h in urban areas. Outside urban areas: 70 km/h in the Flemish Region, 90 km/h in the Walloon Region. Motorways: 120 km/h.

Blood alcohol content: 0.5 g/l (0.2 g/l for novice and professional drivers in certain cases). Frequent checks, high fines.

Mandatory equipment on board: fire extinguisher, fluorescent vest, warning triangle and first-aid kit. Dipped headlights are often necessary even during the day in poor visibility.

Parking: blue zones, parking discs and paid parking lots are very common in the city. Respect bus lanes and tram tracks — quick ticketing.

International driving permit: Belgium recognizes the Geneva Conventions 1949 (1 year) and Vienna Conventions 1968 (3 years). Always present your valid national driving permit with the translation document.

"Driving is on the right. The trickiest rule for a foreign driver is priority to the right: unless there's a sign or “shark's teeth” on the ground, a vehicle emerging from a small street may have priority over one on an avenue.

The motorway network is dense, free, and lit at night. Drive on the right on the motorway and use the left lane only for overtaking.

In cities (Brussels, Antwerp, Liège, Ghent), pay attention to trams: they almost always have priority. Anticipate stops and do not drive onto the tracks.

GPS: activate 30 zones and cycle path alerts — Belgium strongly protects cyclists. In case of an accident, remain calm, use a triangle + vest, and contact emergency services at 112.
